Day #403. Happy Jjaro Boxers Day! On this day 23 years ago Ian McConville of Mac Hall fame created his famous "Now With Better Support" comic strip (aka Jjaro Boxers). Unfortunately no one can be told what Jjaro Boxers are... you have to wear them for yourself. However the Story page has documented the Origin of the Jjaro Boxers (aka the dirty laundry). So on this day of days... just chill out. And for all you gun safety conscious people out there wondering if his safety is on. Mjolnir Recon 54 be like... Happy Jjaro Boxers Day! Day #402. Marathon Inspires Digital Art. Marathon with a far eastern aesthetic by EOR7 (@EOR79), a character concept and model designer from China. Marathon by EOR7 (@EOR79) on x.com. June 27, 2024. Marathon by EOR7 (@EOR79) on x.com. June 27, 2024. Each character is associated with a hanzi. See if you can work out what they mean. Interesting to note the use of the older (classic) phrase "Somewhere In The Heavens"... rather than the newer (modern) phrase "In The Heavens". Got to love the classics! The above artwork reminds me of pictures posted by Crusader (@CrusaderTwitch) at the time of the Marathon Announcement. He asked at the time... You think I'm cool enough to be a runner? BLCK RNNR by Crusader (@CrusaderTwitch) on x.com. May 24, 2024. Of course this reminds of that quote by Sean Connery in the Untouchables... Day #400. Yes folks, it has been 400 days since the Marathon Announcement back in May 24, 2023. Bungie's Scott Taylor (General Manager, Marathon) stated ... "after this announcement we are going to go dark for awhile, for an extended period, while we focus on developing and play testing the game." They even gave us a big hint at the end of Marathon Announcement Trailer with that light bulb moment. 400 Days of Night... and counting. However, today we shed some light on Marathon thanks to the good folks at Antibody. Antibody directed and produced the Marathon Announcement Trailer for Bungie Studios. Day #398. Shotguns Akimbo. 7-7-07 by Silvre on DeviantArt. July 8, 2007. This is a rare piece of Marathon art by Silvre, sister of the Anderson Brothers, Nathan J Anderson and Neal D Anderson (aka Deimos-Remus and Phobos-Romulus). Day #393. Happy Acquisition Day!
Yes folks, on this day 24 years ago Microsoft acquired Bungie Software.
actually i think the downfall of microsoft will result from their choice of name for "microsoft bob". .... who could take that seriously after playing marathon? :)And to add fuel to the fire Bungie would release a Marathon t-shirt about it. Bungie's Marathon Bob versus Microsoft Bob T-Shirt. The rest they say is history. Given the day that is in it Soul (@Soul_ant19) has created another Marathon/Halo crossover. Hyper Lethal by Soul on x.com. June 18, 2024. And in true Marathon fashion that binary code does contain a message. Go decode it for a special message from Soul. Day #391. Marathon Inspires Digital Art. Craig Mullins is often referred to as "The Father of Digital Painting". After graduating from art college in 1990, Craig went all digital for commercial work in 1994. In early 1995 he produced five pieces of Marathon inspired digital art. It is important to remember that Craig did these as a fan of the game. So when I write Marathon Inspires Digital Art... this is not just some humorous attempt at a MIDA acronym. It means exactly what it says and has done so for 30 years. Something to think about. But I digress. Soul (@Soul_ant19) is back... Have Flechette, Will Travel. Somewhere in the heavens... by Soul on x.com. June 16, 2024. So a few days ago we celebrated Flechette Day. Now Soul gives us "Somewhere in the heavens..." with Mjolnir Recon 54 sporting his weapon of choice. Soul did this piece as a commission for hausu (@h_a_u_s_u) who is a big Marathon fan. Matt F (@TotalMattF) took Rythayze's recent Traxus siblings artwork and 'graphicised' it. Adaptive Combat Units by Matt F on x.com. June 16, 2024. The image now has a more graphic novel feel to it with the addition of text such as "Adaptive Combat Units" and "Fighting will only make it smarter." Therefore... RUN! Day #389. Blast from the Past. Trawling through the Story page's seven terabytes of archival data I came across Marathon fan art created before the advent of social media platforms like Facebook (2004), Twitter (2006), Tumblr (2007) or Instagram (2010). Platforms which allowed you to easily share your images. Prior to this you either had to have your own website or rely on the likes of Usenet or Hotline that allowed the posting of image files or the linking to image hosting sites. So back to that long forgotten folder... Marathon character redesign by D. Milligan. 2003. Thankfully this piece came signed and dated. I believe this Dan Milligan, a freelance storyboard and concept artist located in Toronto, Canada. Dan has worked on some major films and gaming franchises. You can see his work on Facebook, Instagram, x.com and his own webpage danmilligan.com. None of his pages contain the above Marathon image from 2003 however. Some of you may remember this pic from back in the day, particularly the Ace of Spades card. It is reminiscent of the Marathon flight suit images Craig Mullins would draw in the 1990s. Interestingly, Craig never drew the Marathon's Security Officer the same in any of his work (official or unofficial). Of course, this is one of the endearing qualities of Marathon. It is mercurial, as soon as you think you have a handle on something it slips through your hands forcing you to rethink again. |

Back in late 2017 Deimos-Remus posted the following image on DeviantArt and announced: Marathon terminal glitch by Deimos-Remus on DeviantArt. December 30, 2017. Day #386. Happy Flechette Day. Yes folks, on this day 28 years ago Bungie unveiled the KKV-7 10mm Flechette SMG for Marathon Infinity. Bungie's website proudly declared on June 12, 1996: The New KKV-7 SMGBungie's Rob McLees designed the new gun for Double Aught who were working on the Blood Tides of Lh'owon scenario for Infinity. Tuncer Deniz (Bungie's Production Manger for Marathon Infinity) wrote in The End: With Rob's help, we came up with an idea for a new gun. Rob quickly made the new gun and it rocked! Now we were cooking!Oddly Rob McLees is not credited in the Marathon Infinity manual for the new gun, only for the original Marathon (2) art and graphics used in the game. The Marathon Infinity manual gives some details on the new gun: KKV-7 10mm SMG FlechetteOddly there is no mention of it being able to fire underwater even though Bungie's website said it would. On the back of the Marathon Infinity box was a screenshot of the flechette being fired underwater. Marathon Infinity box (back) Here is a larger version of the official screenshot used on the Infinity box. The flechette was a game changer for underwater action. No more punching F'lickta to death one at a time. Just a squirt of the flechette got the job done. Above water the flechette was also extremely effective. Its main drawback was the lack of available ammunition. Concept artist John Wallin Liberto immortalised the use of the flechette in this epic action piece. Marathon by John Wallin Liberto in original available web size 800x600 pixels, circa 2002. This artwork dates back to at least 2002 and may be earlier. It was originally available from John's website at www.johnwallin.net. But that site is long gone nor does it feature on John's ArtStation, x.com, Facebook, or Instagram pages. One day perhaps John will repost this piece in a higher quality format. It certainly deserves it. Happy Flechette Day.

Day #385. The smallest piece of Marathon fan art to ever appear on the Story page. Marathon stamp by Basement-Aviator on DeviantArt. September 15, 2017. The "somewhere in the heavens... they are waiting" stamp is good for one postcard anywhere in the Sol system. Greetings from Mars. Wish you were here. It won't do you any good ninety-seven light-years from the gravitational center of the Milky Way. Lh'owon. I'll come when I'm ready by T-M-Krisnack on DeviantArt. February 15, 2006. This sketch of Mjolnir Recon 54 by T-M-Krisnack on DeviantArt always brings a smile to my face. It dates from 2006 and is entitled "I'll come when I'm ready". According to the artist our hero has just been awoken from stasis in orbit around Lh'owon and is told by Durandal that he is going down to the surface to find some lost artifact? Of course this type of attitude doesn't work with Durandal which explains why we are teleported down to the suface with only our pistol. Note to memory... don't piss off Durandal. Greetings from Lh'owon. Wish you were here. Ode to Marathon by issachar17 on DeviantArt. March 29, 2010. |

Day #384. Exotic weapons in Marathon? Marathon piss gun by Connor Schultz (@Cschultz12) on x.com. May 28, 2023. Californian artist Connor Schultz (@Cschultz12) captioned the above image "Marathon man shooting his piss gun." This reminds me of the unimplemented net game option "Keep Away from Rob" in Marathon 2. Old school Marathoners may remember this one. When active a player taking the net name "Rob" received invincibility and invisibility for the duration of the game. Rob's objective was to try to make as many kills as possible. The rest of the players quite naturally had to try and stay away from him. The net game was named after Rob McLees, Art Director on Marathon 2. Rob is now working on the NuMarathon so perhaps "Keep Away from Rob" will finally become a reality. Exotic weapons in Marathon? Spray and pray! Always point downwind. "Keep Away from Connor". Interesting to note that Connor recently reposted his image in a slightly cropped format. Marathon piss gun by Connor Schultz (@Cschultz12) on x.com. June 4, 2024. It was this repost that reminded me of the original image. The Story page never 4gets. No mention of what this gun fires this time around however. Maybe Connor got the standard C&D letter. When asked if this was Marathon? Conor replied "More like freakython". Well there you go. You couldn't make this stuff up if you tried. On the exact the same day as Connor posted his original Marathon piss gun image Papa_ApplePie/ (@Papa_ApplePie) posted the following image. Day #378. Happy Pride Month... Marathon style. Public Access Terminal <39.49.295.68> by mothcpu on tumblr. June 1, 2024. The above piece of art for Pride Month is by Moth (aka mothcpu, aka mothcomputer) a robot and video game artist on tumblr, x.com, Instagram and his own home page. Moth writes: happy pride month specifically to durandalThe description for the image reads: Digital drawing of abstract, angular depictions of various levels from the game Marathon, in a variety of bright colors against a black background. In the center is the titular spaceship UESC Marathon, surrounded by space.Durandal's text is from everybody's favorite level Colony Ship For Sale, Cheap. Oddly, for all its drawbacks this level has some of the best terminals in the game, most notably the three candles metaphor and the Darwin analogy. Given that it is Pride Month here is the Story page's Marathon ARG icon array all dressed up for the parade.
The Marathon ARG write up will continue this summer with new information, new revelations, and a new timeline. Whose side will be you on at Tau Ceti IV? |
