This Day in Marathon.

Day #800.
Be careful. Everything it not is as used to be.
Leela.  Shake Before Using... (Terminal 1).  July 26, 2794.
Happy Marathon 2 for Windows 95 Demo day.

Yes folks, on this day 29 years ago Bungie released the Marathon 2 for Windows 95 Demo.

The demo Read Me appeared to have rewitten history.
The Marathon was disabled in orbit and the colony overrun. Having been sent up to the Marathon in the first hours of the attack, you were the sole colonist left to face the onslaught. But you weren't entirely alone...

Damaged, one of the Marathon's onboard synthetic intellects, Durandal, struggled to organize a defense of the stricken vessel.
No mention of Leela in this rewrite.

However the fate of the Tau Ceti colony was still the same.
Fearing imminent Pfhor retaliation, Durandal left Tau Ceti, taking the Rebel S'pht with him.

Three Terran months later, the Pfhor armada arrived at Tau Ceti and razed the planet to bedrock.
Even on a Windows machine you can't beat at good planet razing to get the blood boiling.

Marathon 2 for Windows 95 was rated MATURE by the ESRB due to its graphic depiction of violence.

The Macintosh version was never rated on the basis that only mature people played games on a Mac.

On this day of days who else better to give you graphic depiction of violence than AlexB207 (@AlexB207Swag) in this image entitled "Juggernaut down!".

Juggernaut down! by AlexB207 (@AlexB207Swag) on x.com. July 30, 2025

The colors are so vivid in this image that you can almost feel the searing heat from the lava.

Nonchalantly Mjolnir Recon 54 delivers the kill shot as the Jug sinks below.

In Marathon they have a saying... when the Jug goes down, you'd better be running.

This nice reworking of the recent Marathon reveal assets is by Angelestro (@Angelestro03), a professional 3D artist specializing in cyberpunk and sci-fi themed assets.

Angelestro writes:
I was heavily inspired by Marathon for this one and I wanted to give a homage to trilogy of game.
But it goes further than that by introducing Angelestro's own creations.

And yes Angelestro is a furry, like so many Marathon fans these days.

Why are so many furries turning to Marathon?

Or perhaps it is the other way around.
Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies...

On this day 31 years ago Bungie announced their new game Marathon.

Somewhere in the heavens... they are waiting.

Fans were waiting...

...waiting...

...waiting...

(circumstances are cyclical)

But I digress.

It is also... Happy Marathon Attack Day.

FUCK by DLU/Deimos (@Matrix_XV) on twitter.com. May 25, 2023.

That's right folks on this day 769 years from now the U.E.S.C. Marathon will be attacked by hostile alien forces.

According to Bungie's corrected timeline the Marathon will be attacked on July 25, 2794 at 0820 hours.

I guess it was no coincidence that Bungie chose to correct the attack date using the date of the Marathon annoucement, 800 years in the future.

While the first terminal in the game gives an attack date and time the format is incorrect.

When Bungie corrected the date inconsistencies in the game via the Lost Network Packets they also provided a new attack date.

They didn't need to do this but they did.

Sam writes:
Arrival

My attempt at re-imagining the starting area of the first level of Bungie's 1994 "Marathon" in UE5. With the exception of widening the hallways a bit, I wanted to try and stick with the original style and design of the space.

Marathon Arrival by Sam Donez on ArtStation. July 17, 2025.

Sam continues:
I added a few extra details but overall focused on maintaining the sort of dormant/empty vibe of this 90's FPS level (it's easy to want to keep adding detail, especially for a spaceship interior).

Marathon Arrival by Sam Donez on ArtStation. July 17, 2025.

Sam adds:
For the wall around the terminal, I referenced some original concept art by Craig Mullins, seen here: https://marathon.bungie.org/story/CM_marine2.html.

The terminal screen image is taken from the actual terminal in the original game.
It even has that ubiquitous pipe work.

Marathon Arrival by Sam Donez on ArtStation. July 17, 2025.

Check out Sam's work on ArtStation.

Staying on the subject of re-imagining Marathon, Team DDD have created Durandal Done Different. to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release Marathon 2: Durandal.

Now you might be thinking this is a little early.

Marathon 2: Durandal was released in November 21, 1995.

Well in the NuBungie timeline all events prior to Halo have been condensed into two weeks and are covered in the first two minutes of The History of Bungie (Part 1) seven hour video.

Who cares I hear you say... at least Durandal Done Different is out now and playable.

The new game has 28 levels using the same story of the original game and similar constraints, blending together classic and modern level design styles to make an exciting revisit to Lh'owon.

This Day in Marathon.

Today is a threefer day.

Today is...
Marathon 2 Announcement Day.
Don't Worry, Be Happy Day.
Goodbye Alex Day.
Yes folks, on this 30 years ago Bungie announced Marathon 2: Durandal.

According to the press release:
It is rare to find a sequel that breaks significant new ground in style or technology. At Bungie, however, rare is well done.
Of the three games in the Trilogy, Marathon 2 sits in the "Goldilocks Zone", "neither too hot nor too cold, but just right".

If you are looking for mind-bending lore or head-wrecking puzzles you won't find it in Marathon 2.

It's a safe game for your kids.

Today is also... Don't Worry, Be Happy Day.

It was at the time we all thought the world was going to end so Bungie gave us permission to look our best sporting the Marathon's Story page t-shirt.

Since we survived the closure of the universe in 2000 Bungie/Microsoft wanted all the shirts back.

Just as well we didn't do the Marathon's Story page pants.

Seven-six-eleven-five-four-seventeen-thirty-two the day before...

Boots by renegaade on the Official Marathon Discord. April 22, 2025.

This Marathon Reveal Cinematic Short edit is by renegaade and is inspired by the trailer for the film 28 Years Later.

Both use the Rudyard Kipling poem "Boots" first published in 1903 and recorded in 1915 by Taylor Holmes.

But it is actaully an edited version of the original poem.

"Boots" recounts the endless marching of the British Army infantryman during the Second Boer War (1899 - 1902).
Seven-six-eleven-five-nine-an'-twenty mile to-day
Four-eleven-seventeen-thirty-two the day before --
(Boots-boots-boots-boots-movin' up and down again!)
There's no discharge in the war!
Its use in Marathon imagines the endless daily grind of the extraction shooter.

Try-try-try-try-to think o' something different
Oh-my-God-keep-me from goin' lunatic!
(Boots-boots-boots-boots-movin' up an' down again!)

Lessons applicable to the game: Move fast, seize the initiative, wield superior firepower, dive into the melee, anticipate enemy movements, slaughter the defenseless, endure.

This Day in Marathon.

Day #775.

Happy Bungie Day and Happy Pathways Into Darkness Demo Day.

Yes folks, it's a twofer.

A 'Two for the Price of One' Day.

It always amuses me to see Bungie rewrite their own history.

Case in point.

WHAT IS BUNGIE DAY? According to the Bungie Foundation anyway.

WHAT IS BUNGIE DAY? posted on Bungie.net. May 2, 2025..

Only it wasn't.

It was created in 2000.

Here's the origin of Bungie Day... again.

You have to go way back into the myths of time to February 24, 2000.

It was reported that the Bungie Events calendar on bungie.net had an entry dated Fri, July 7th 2000 7:07 AM CST called Bungie Day. This is the first known reference to Bungie Day.

It was entered into Bungie's events calendar by yeroen (aka Max Hoberman).

As fate would have it a REALLY BIG thing would happen between February 24, 2000 and July 7, 2000.

Microsoft acquired Bungie Software on June 19, 2000.

Bungie Day was cancelled as Bungie were relocating to Redmond, Washington.

Not a great start to what would become a fun day for Bungie fans.

For Bungie Day in 2001 Proud Flesh (aka Matt Soell) provided some advice to fans on how to celebrate Bungie Day responsibly.

Of course Matt made it sound like we had always celebrated Bungie Day.

It's called Bungie Spin.

But let us not forget Pathways Into Darkness Demo Day.

Pathways Into Darkness by Craig Mullins on the Marathon Art of Craig Mullins Gallery.

On this day 32 years ago Bungie released the Pathways Into Darkness Demo via America OnLine and Macintosh FTP sites on the World Wide Web.

Exactly seven years before Bungie Day was a thing.

More Locus... I hear you cry.

And who else better to give you Locus... than LocustTheSpawn (aka Keenan Van Richardson).

Locus by LocustTheSpawn (@LocustTheSpawn) on x.com. May 7, 2025..

Has that "Don't mess with Locus" look.

Keenan originally called this a "sketch" but later a "painting".

This is no mere sketch.

Locus isn't just a 'tank' he's a 'jet tank'.

Locus by SPLART (@splart.bsky.social) on Bluesky. April 26, 2025..

No kidding.

Our boy Locus has jump jets or specifically thrusters.

Marathon Alpha. April 2025..

One wonders where Bungie got this idea from?

Amazing to think that you can take Halo and Destiny and create Marathon.

Oh wait...

This Day in Marathon.

Day #773.

Blast from the Past.

Thanks to Twixxo over on the Unoffical Marathon Discord for posting a piece of Bungie history from early 1994.

University of Chicago Chronicle. Game Boys. February 17, 1995.

While the University of Chicago Chronicle article deals mainly with Pathways Into Darkness, near the end is a reference to Marathon.

Bungie had showed their next game (code-named Marathon) at the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco (January 1994).

Bungie would later referred to this as the Marathon Alpha.

According to the article the expected release date for the game was May 1994.

The article also makes reference to a "second installment" scheduled for release at the end of 1994.

Ah... the optimism of youth.

Then again fast-forward to 2025.

As they say in Marathon... (circumstances are cyclical).

Wait... these guys aren't young!

But I digress.

Folks want more Locus art apparently.

Our boy Locus is a Marathon fan favorite.

Spruce gives us this dramatic image entitled "HOLD THE LINE".

COLONY ZERO by Kry.exe (@KryDotExe) on x.com. July 2, 2025.

Kry.exe writes:
When inspiration hits, you gotta do something about it.
Indeed.

This piece of inspiration is entitled COLONY ZERO. A term used in the Marathon Closed Playtest 1.

You may also recognise the text at the top.

The text at the bottom about Prometheus is from Bungie's marathonthegame.com website.

Prometheus is best known from Greek mythology as the Titan who stole fire from the Olympian gods and gave it to humanity.

The more modern intrepretation is that Prometheus represents the human striving for knowledge and the risk of overreaching or unintended consequences.

Much like the colony on Tau Ceti.

When Prometheus stole the fire, Zeus, the king of the gods, decided to punish mankind.

He created Pandora, gave her a box and warned her to never open it.

What's in the box?

You can see where this is going.

But I digress.

Kry.exe is no stranger to the Story page. A self-confessed Furry, we featured his emotional image of Dr. Song, dying far from home, back on May 13, 2025.

A classic. Here it is again.
