This Day in Marathon.

Day #641.

Happy Marathon Infinity Announcement Day.

Yes folks, on this day 29 years ago Bungie announced the development of Marathon Infinity at Macworld Expo Tokyo, Japan 1996.

The Bungie Booth girls were out in force for the event.

The Bungie press announcement read:
Never-before-used enhancements will free the player from the strict linearity of previous games...
The announcement came as something of a surprise. Greg Kirkpatrick had left Bungie some months before so who was going to do it? Matt Soell had the answer. Matt wrote:
"Greg is working with us again, although he's working from his new home in Brooklyn, NY. He's put together some VERY interesting ideas, and while I can't talk about them in any detail yet, I can tell you that the plot of the scenario in Marathon Infinity will be as labyrinthine as you've come to expect - perhaps more so.."
Indeed, Marathon fans are still trying to extract themselves from this labyrinthine nightmare.

The Pfhor are repelled. Their ship vanished, leaving behind a thousand bodies in space-courtesy of a funny elf girl. Frieren saved Marathon and many BOBs. The colony on Tau Ceti had also repelled the Pfhor attack, thanks to nine military Mjolnir Mark IV cyborgs covertly living.
What an excellent tour-de-force of Marathon in the form of images.

Hats off to kanokoga and Frieren.

This Day in Marathon.

Day #640.

It's sketchy Friday!

We've got sketches.

But first...

kanokoga (@kanokoga) takes on Juggernauts in the penultimate level of Marathon.

Try again by kanokoga (@kanokoga) on x.com. February 20, 2025

kanokoga writes:
Try Again. Ahh, Juggernauts... the biggest and toughest enemies in Marathon. They fire homing grenades and machine gun rounds. At least they're kind enough to beep while falling before they explode. This is the only level where Frieren encounters them.
Juggernauts... and that exit terminal.

It is probably the most visited terminal in the whole game. Hence the level name.

The reason for this is twofold:
  1. Try again is set to Extermination. You can leave a maximum of eight Pfhor alive to get the success message. However you MUST kill all the Juggernauts. This is hard coded into the game much like killing the cyborg Pfhor onboard the Pfhor ship. So to avoid repeated visits to the exit terminal just kill EVERYTHING.
  2. There is no pattern buffer on the final level Ingue Ferroque apart from a secret one so the chances of finding it are remote. If you die on Ingue Ferroque (and you will) you start back on Try again and take the walk to the exit terminal.
That repeated walk to the terminal was immortalised Jay Faircloth.

Jay wrote:
That level traumatized me for life the first time around, never mind the Vid-Master edition of it. I think I have that failure message memorized still. I have a couple more lurking in my brain that should see the light of day soon.
Here's a work in progress sketch of it.

Welcome to the Revolution. The S'pht Compilers have finally rebelled and are fighting alongside Frieren. This is the happiest moment for Frieren, who has fought almost alone until now. She also knows what to do if they block the corridors.
One wonders what Frieren thought of the mysterious Pfhor egg on the previous level.

kanokoga has quickly made it all the way to Pfhoraphobia and killed the Pfhor cyborg.

Pfhoraphobia by kanokoga (@kanokoga) on x.com. February 18, 2025

kanokoga writes:
Pfhoraphobia. Frieren kills a Pfhor cyborg that enslaves all S'pht Compilers. The cyborg is actually very weak; it only takes a few bullets before it dies. However, it still stands after death, so I kept firing at it for a while the first time.
Pfhoraphobia (Fear of Pfhor) is designed to put the fear into you. The fear of dying.

There is no shield recharge station or pattern buffer on this level so when you die, and you will, you have to start all over again... and again... and again.

It's akin to an Extraction Shooter where if you die you lose your gear and loot, and have to start all over again. It makes staying alive and extracting a priority.

Of course you always need one more piece to get that Prime.

Steve Cotton (Creative Director on Marathon). Somewhere In The Heavens - ViDoc.

But I digress.

Fear.

Unfortunately, no one can be told what Pfhoraphobia is. You have to see it for yourself.

Fear.

Pfhor girl:   What do you know about fear?
Security Officer:   All there is.
Pfhor girl:   Well not like this. Not like him.

Fear.

I imagine that "Pfhoraphobia" will be impossible, but I haven't tried it yet.

(Jason Jones, comp.sys.mac.games, 25 January 1995)

Fear.

Pfhor fighter:   How do you kill a human without fear?
Enforcer:   By puttin' the fear in him.

Fear.

No, there is no saved game terminal on this level.

(Marathon Spoiler Guide)

Fear.

Rumours of a secret Pattern Buffer on Pfhoraphobia spread like wild fire during the early part of 1995. Some said it was in a secret passageway. Others behind a secret wall panel. Some said you needed the secret Hypervision to see it. While others said it couldn't be seen, you just had to use the action key in the right spot.

Fear.

Pfhor boy:   Do not try and save the game. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realise the tru 7h.
Security Officer:   What tru 7h?
Pfhor boy:   There is no save.
Security Officer:   There is no save?
Pfhor boy:   Then you'll see, that it is not the game that saves, it is only yourself.
Security Officer:   Save myself?
Pfhor boy:   Yes... RUN !!!

Fear.

From the relative safety of your ledge, polish up your rocket launcher and fire a well aimed projectile at the Alien Leader's head. When you do this, a pack of furious Compilers will swoop up and attack.

(Tuncer Deniz, Marathon: The Official Strategy Guide)

Fear.

Some say that the Pfhor cyborg controller looks like Osama bin Laden when viewed up close. No surprises there, didn't Bungie use the image of Saddam Hussein in one of their other games? Others question why the Compilers still attack after you kill their controller. Some question Bungie's motives for creating games where the "bad dude at the end" can be killed with just a few bullets. Others simply point to May 1, 2011.

Fear.

Unfortunately, no one can be told what Pfhoraphobia is. You have to PLAY it for yourself.

no marathon at state of play by AlexB207 (@AlexB207Swag) on x.com. February 13, 2025

Alex simply entitled the piece... no marathon at state of play.

If you know your Greek mythology then you will know this is a play on Sisyphus who was made to eternally push a boulder up a hill by Zeus. When the boulder reached the top it would roll down the other side and Sisyphus had to push it back up again.

It has become a metaphor for the human struggle against the absurdity of life (like waiting for Marathon).

The inset image in the top left is the Marathon equivalent of the Chudjak 'nothing ever happens' meme.

And now for something completely different.

Marathon/Frieren crossover by kanokoga (@kanokoga) on x.com. February 9, 2025.

This Marathon/Frieren crossover piece is by kanokoga (@kanokoga) on X.

Frieren is the title character and protagonist of the Japanese manga series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, which first appeared in 2020.

So you know you've made it when your 30 year old game gets crossed with a highly popular 1000+ year old elven mage.

kanokoga's artwork makes nice use of the Marathon poster and the red Marine image from the Marathon demo.

Frieren obviously likes the big guns.

The image reminds me of Alex Okita's Marathon Girl.

Sir Double D (@sirdoubled.bsky.social) continues his iconic moments in Marathon with The Rose.

The Rose by Sir Double D (@sirdoubled.bsky.social) on Bluesky. February 6, 2025.

The Security Officer saves seven BoBs. Yes, seven!

Sir Double D depicts the last room on this level. Dead centre of the rose shaped part of the map (hence the level name The Rose).

The room is called the Pistil and the surrounding area are the Petals.

There are a lot of BoBs in the Pistil and you are going to have to save as many as you can if you have any hope of satisfying Leela.
You have allowed too many of the civilians to be killed. It is doubtful that any of the survivors will give us any useful information.
To make matters worse the level is set to Extermination meaning you have to kill all the aliens.

If you don't Leela won't let you leave.
You have not sufficiently secured the area. There are civilians who are still in danger.
Leela_Bad_RobotLeela_Bad_Robot
                                          Bad Robot.

No one ever said Marathon was easy!

Seven interesting things about The Rose.
  1. This is where you get your second pistol. It's pistols akimbo from now on. Highly accurate and quite devastating if used correctly.
  2. A secret area within a secret area. Fortunately it is shown in a terminal. This contains Durandal's 'living in a box' terminal. Important from a story perspective.
  3. First use of Marathon's dead BoB sprite. Given the level's mission these sprites create an air of urgency and a sense of loss as you find them lying dead on the floor. Could you have saved them?
  4. There are two potential suicide traps on this level, both associated with platforms. Greg Kirkpatrick seemingly had a blind spot when it came to platforms. He would repeat it again on Blaspheme Quarantine.
  5. This level introduces us to MIDA. But what does MIDA stand for?
  6. The Fun House problem...
  7. The Rose too hard to Vidmaster? Well Jeffrey Lindquist (a.k.a. Sidoh) was the first person to beat The Rose with fists only and save enough Bobs to satisfy Leela. His name is enshrined in the Hall of Vidmaster Valhalla.

It was created by Bungie's Robt McLees for Double Aught who were doing the 'Blood Tides of Lh'owon' scenario for Bungie.

Somewhat surprisingly Robt is not credited in the Marathon Infinity manual for creating it.

But they are Fast As F...

Built in NuDetroit, circa 2795.

Put on board the UESC Equanimity July 7, 2797.

Destination... Tau Ceti VI.

This Day in Marathon.

Day #624.

If I Had a Rocket Launcher, I'd Make Somebody Pay.

Paz (@TheRealQuenny) gives us Mr. Marathon with SPNKR.

Here's a work in progress of the full head shot

It is intersting to note that the original SPNKR-X17 SSM Launcher had the offical nickname 'Lazyboy'.

However it never caught on with fans and SPNKR became the defacto name with all its inevitable connotations.

It even became the punchline to a Christopher Barrett joke on the Marathon Discord shortly after the Marathon announcement.

It went like this.

But I digress.

The SPNKR-X17 SSM Launcher and later the SPNKR-XP SSM Launcher has a certain cachet among Marathon fans.

The "je ne sais quoi" of Marathon.

It is hard to aim. Its ammunition is limited. But it packs a long range punch that is so satisfying.

Its desirability is epitomized in the epic Marathon 2 level "If I Had a Rocket Launcher, I'd Make Somebody Pay" by Greg Kirkpatrick.

Only by Vidmastering this level do you truly understand what it stands for.

This Day in Marathon.

Day #623.

Time in limited.

So RUN!

Marathon Marine running by AlexB207 (@AlexB207Swag) on x.com. February 2, 2025.

AlexB207 (@AlexB207Swag) gives us this gritty action shot of Mr Marathon with his go-to Assault Rifle.

Of course the M.75 Assault Rifle is highly inaccurate at long range due to a manufacturing defect.

No doubt caused by underpaid laborers toiling for a thinly-veiled government-owned arms manufacturing machine (oiled with the blood of the underclasses, by the way) which existed solely to line the pockets of the greedy bureaucrats who run the military/industrial complex.

The original M.75 Assault Rifle was described as a ridiculous toy designed to impress aging pompous generals.

Its preposterously short barrel and prodigious recoil made firing the weapon akin to wrestling a greased pig.

But Mr. Marathon likes wrestling greased pigs and he doesn't do long distances.

He likes the close and personal touch.

... you're going to need a bigger bag.

Day #622.

Foreshadowing.

Back in November 2021 Baran on the Marathon Discord posted a series of images.

Here are two.

Marathon cosplay in 2021?

Marathon Annoucement trailer. May 24, 2023.

The Marathon tunnel scene has gone on to inspire numerous artists, most notably Jack Strider.

So how did Baran know?

Prior to today Baran is probably best known for interviewing the reculsive Greg Kirkpatrick back in 2019.

Here's part of that interview:
Baran:  My favorite part of Infinity is easily the dream terminals. Were these terminals made with any coherence in mind, i.e. were they connected, or was their purpose to create questions for the player?

Greg:  I'd have to go back and review them. I might go back and play the game again and try to figure out what was going on. :)
Don't worry folks... the 2046 annivesary is fast approaching.

The answer to the 'ultimate question' will be revealed.

But today we ask... how did Baran know?

Day #621.

Got Marathon?

Well CryoS has a poster for you.

Marathon poster by CryoS on r/marathon. November 10, 2021.

Now before you click the image for a larger version please read below.

CryoS writes:
went and made myself this to have it printed, but figured hey, maybe someone else might want it for a similar purpose. Sharing it nontheless.
This is a humongous 37.5 MB png file designed to be taken to a printing shop for a professional looking poster.

But people have been crying out for larger versions of Marathon art so knock yourselves out.

CryoS went on to make a version without the Marathon text to look less cluttered as phone wallpaper.

Marathon poster (no text) by CryoS on r/marathon. November 10, 2021.

This turned it into a whopping 41.1 MB file.

JeBOBs on the Marathon Discord shows us what it looks like on his phone.

CryoS Marathon phone wallpaper posted by JeBOBs on the Marathon Discord. November 7, 2021.

CryoS commented:
it fits surprisingly well as a phone wallpaper
I have to agree.

So now's your chance to download the most ginormous piece of Marathon wallpaper for your phone.

Astound your friends by showing them the location of the Pfhor homeworld on your stellar map.

Be the hero of the day by locating Beta Naxos and tracing the Nar route to the Vylae system.

Find the correct location of Tau Ceti so Bungie don't make the same mistake twice.
