About: | In January 1999 Craig described the above image as follows.
"This is from Bungie's game Pathways into Darkness. You are a marine who has to get to the bottom of an ancient South American Pyramid and kill a sleeping god who has some big plans when he wakes up. It is my favorite Bungie game. It was totally immersive. It was rather primitive technically, but I really liked how the game was designed. Maybe it is a case of first love, but I have not enjoyed a game as much since." Pathways into Darkness (1993) is Marathon-related because it is set in the same universe and both games are linked by the Jjaro backstory. In February 1997 Jason Jones linked the two games further when he wrote: "the pathways hintbook was written by a friend of mine, and i wasn't closesly involved in the project. we thought it'd be a cool idea to write the hintbook like it was the journal of the hero of pathways, written after the fact. i think we made several mistakes, naming the player character being one of them, but the overall effect was something like we intended. |

About: | Larger version sent by Craig Mullins to the new Bungie fansite (bungie.org)
on January 27, 1999 for the PID section. This would later become the Pathways Into Darkness page (pid.bungie.org).
He wrote at the time:
"I was just tooling around my archives and I came upon this image. I don't even remember doing it. In February 1999 I had the opportunity to ask Craig about this image, he replied:
"I did this 4 years ago, I sent it to Jason Jones, as I remember reading that he had a soft spot for Pathways. I do to, I really like that game. I play through it every once in a while." This would coincide with the time Craig did his first Marathon images. |
