This section is designed to list the release dates and other significant dates in the life of the Marathon series, including Pathways Into Darkness. Dates are given correct to the nearest day where known. Supporting evidence (press releases, newsletters, usenet posts, etc.) is also provided where possible.


May, 1991   Bungie Software Products Corporation founded.

June, 1991   Operation: Desert Storm released.

Feb, 1992   Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete released.

Jul 7, 1993   The Pathways into Darkness demo (vA1) becomes available to download  from America OnLine.

Aug 3, 1993   Bungie begins selling Pathways Into Darkness at Boston Macworld, 350 copies sold out of  500 copies on sale at the show.

Jan 5, 1994   Bungie show their upcoming game (code-named Marathon) at the San Francisco Macworld Expo.

Mar 14, 1994   Bungie announces a PowerPC version of Pathways Into Darkness.

Apr 7, 1994   The PowerPC version of the demo becomes available to download  from America OnLine. The download included a v1.1 to v2.0 updater for the full game.

Jul 25, 1994   Bungie announces Marathon.

Aug 2, 1994   Bungie unveils Marathon at Boston Macworld.

Sep 19, 1994   Bungie announces Marathon... AGAIN!

Sep 22, 1994   Bungie uploads a collage of Marathon screenshots to the Mac Games library on America OnLine. The Collage also came with two press releases. One dated September 19, 1994 and the other September 22, 1994.

Nov 23, 1994   Marathon Demo released.

Dec 17, 1994   Last polygon filled. It wasn't Dec 14, 1994. The proof.

Dec 21, 1994   Marathon ships.

Apr 20, 1995   Bungie announces the Marathon CD.

Jul 19, 1995   Bungie announces Marathon 2: Durandal. It was actual announced one day earlier by Power Computing when they announced The Disc.

Aug 8, 1995   Bungie unveils Marathon 2: Durandal at Boston Macworld '95.

Aug 8, 1995   Power Computing distribute The Disc containing the Marathon 2: Durandal Preview at Boston Macworld '95.

Oct 12, 1995   Marathon 2: Durandal Demo released.

Nov 10, 1995   The first copy of Marathon 2: Durandal rolls off the production line.

Nov 21, 1995   Marathon 2: Durandal ships. The official release date for Marathon 2 was November 30,  but Cyberian Outpost received copies on November 21 and began shipping.

Feb 22, 1996   Bungie announces Marathon Infinity and Greg Kirkpatrick is doing it.

Mar 30, 1996   Bungie announces that Marathon 2: Durandal to be ported to Windows 95.

May 16, 1996   Bungie unveils Marathon Infinity at the 2nd annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles.

Jul 31, 1996   Marathon 2: Durandal for Windows 95 Demo released.

Aug 10, 1996   Marathon Infinity Demo released.

Sep 6, 1996   Marathon 2: Durandal for Windows 95 ships.

Sep 17, 1996   Marathon Infinity goes Gold Master  and  The End is written.

Oct 15, 1996   Marathon Infinity ships. Confirmed in the first Bungie Newsletter. Note that while the official shipping date was Oct 15 there were reports of some stores having copies as early as Oct 12.

Mar 21, 1997   Bungie announces Marathon Trilogy Box Set.

May 1, 1997   The original shipping date for Marathon Trilogy Box Set was May 1, 1997 but it got delayed by about two weeks.

Oct 27, 1998   Bungie is ranked 101 in the top 500 fastest growing private companies in the United States.

Jul 1, 1999   Bungie announces the Mac Action Sack. Order it today.

Jul 21, 1999   Bungie releases the Mac Action Sack at the Macworld Expo in New York City.

Jul 21, 1999   Bungie announces Halo at the Macworld Expo in New York City.

Jan 17, 2000   Bungie releases the Marathon 2: Durandal source code.

Jun 19, 2000   Microsoft acquires Bungie.  Dear Fans letter from Alex and Jason.  Bungie's FAQ on the acquisition.

Jul 10, 2007   Microsoft announces at E3 that Freeverse are working on Marathon: Durandal for Xbox Live Arcade.

Aug 1, 2007   Marathon: Durandal released for Xbox Live Arcade.

Jun 17, 2008   Freeverse announces the "Jjaro Map Pack" a downloadable content pack for Marathon: Durandal.

Jul 1, 2011   Bungie releases the Marathon Infinity source code.

Jul 7, 2011   Marathon for iOS is released on the App Store by Soli Deo Gloria Productions, LLC.

Dec 14, 2011   Marathon 2: Durandal for iOS is released on the App Store by Soli Deo Gloria Productions, LLC.

May 30, 2012   Marathon Infinity for iOS is released on the App Store by Soli Deo Gloria Productions, LLC.

Apr 9, 2013   Pathways Into Darkness for Mac OS X is released on the Mac App Store by Man Up Time Studios.

Jan 5, 2014   Aleph One 1.1 (Marathon Open Source) is released featuring compatibility with the original Marathon files.

Jan 31, 2022   Sony Interactive Entertainment to acquire Bungie, Inc.

Jul 15, 2022   Sony Interactive Entertainment acquires Bungie, Inc.
