This Day in Marathon.

Day #558.

As we reach the end of the month here is a random snapshot of some of what we covered in November.

What did you miss?

Friday November 29, 2024

This Day in Marathon.

Day #557.

It's sketchy Friday.

We've got sketches.

First up...

Marathon Kindergarten. A humorous take on the lowest difficulty level in Marathon by y-mirata from Japan.

Marathon Kindergarten by y-mirata on DeviantArt. June 18, 2017.

Accordingly to Bungie (in the Marathon manual page 9):
Spazeroids should play on an easy level, Vidmasters play at higher levels.
Bungie would later distance themselves from this statement so as to not cause offence replacing it with an equally offensive ageist statement in the Marathon 2: Durandal manual page 9:
Babyboomers should play on an easy level, Generation X'ers play at higher levels.
Fortunately it was 90s and nobody gave a hoot!

Marathon weapon redesigns by ninboy01.

0110100001100100000110100010000111101110 by ninboy01 on DeviantArt. April 20, 2013.

ninboy01 writes:
Welcome to my MARATHON Trilogy redesigns. Marathon is a little known FPS IP created by Bungie long before Halo came on the scene. Yet, I felt compelled to bring these fossils back to life. I didn't even have to go to Cinnabar Island to do it. (Pokemon joke. Cough, cough)

(Description: Top down, left to right)

First, we have the redesign of the Pfhor "alien weapon" Rifle as seen in Marathon 2: Durandal. Fires fully automatic with a three shot spread. I "alienated" it up with some influence from modern Halo Covenant designs. Your welcome.

Second is the .44 Mega Class A1 Magnum pistol from Marathon 2. Reinterpreted with reference to the original .45 from the first game, as well as some design influence from the Halo M6 series of sidearms. (Foot note) Do not aim at face.

Thirdly, the MA-75 Assault Rifle with under-slung grenade attachment. Reminiscent of its M2: D appearance, with clear design characteristics from its original M.75 look (Marathon 1), with illusion to the MA5 series from Halo. 600 rounds a minute of .75 caliber lead. Feel free to pull the trigger down. (Again, Do not aim at face).

Fourth. The Zeus Class Tech.50 Fusion Pistol. This little guy is a semi-auto energy weapon that could be charged up to unleash a more powerful bolt, and would go on to directly inspire the creation of the Covenant's Type 25 DE Plasma Pistol.

Fifth(ly?) Is the handheld TOZT-7 (You know, Toasty?) Flamethrower unit. Original designed for a backpack feed. I... took some liberty's for my own intended purposes. (NO, not porpoises).

Sixth. The WSTE-M5 Combat Shotgun, first seen in Marathon 2. Unfortunately, I don't find it's original 18th century weapon design quite... fitting for a Sci-Fi universe. So I looked to the Halo series for inspiration.

Seventh on the list is the original feel with a new look for the Alien Weapon from the original Marathon. In this form it is an automatic pistol, and is simply a Pfhor Pistol. (That can spray plasma like a garden hose).

Last, but not least. The KKV-7 Sub-machine gun, which made it's soul appearance in and being the only new weapon added in Marathon: Infinity. It fires 10mm Flechettes. Yes, it fires half inch wide razor sharp knives. Have fun with that.
ninboy01 would later add:
and if you translated that binary...
Now that's a sketchy story.

Happy sketchy Friday.

Stay sketchy.

This Day in Marathon.

Day #556.

Memento Mori.

Memento_Mori by y-mirata on DeviantArt. June 17, 2017.

This humorist piece is by y-mirata from Japan.

Memento mori is a Latin phrase meaning 'remember that you must die'.

The inevitability of death.

It is a common theme in art and is frequently depicted as a skull or other symbols such as hour glasses, dying flowers, rotting fruit, or guttering candles.

Such images and themes can be found throughout the Marathon Trilogy.

Some are obvious.

Official Marathon screenshots from Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity.

Some are not.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find them all.

This tape will self-destruct in seven seconds.

Marathon 2: Durandal (1995) Gameplay.

Marathon 2: Durandal (1995) Gameplay by Pro-Ship of Theseus (@severeerror52) on x.com. July 14, 2024.

Made me chuckle anyway.

This satire on Marathon 2 underwater fighting is by Pro-Ship of Theseus (@severeerror52) on X.

A self-declared... slightly moronic smart-ass... who hails from Scotland.

Thankfully Marathon Infinity put an end to underwater slugfests by giving us the KKV 10mm SMG Flechette.

Marathon by John Wallin Liberto. circa 2002.

Oddly the Marathon Infinity manual does not say that the Flechette can fire underwater.

On the back of the Marathon Infinity box there is a screenshot of the Flechette being fired underwater.

Here is a larger version of the official screenshot used on the Infinity box.

Then again the Marathon 2: Durandal box had a similar screenshot.

Marathon 2: Durandal box (front)

However firing the Zeus Class Fusion Pistol underwater didn't work out so well in Marathon 2.

Question 11 of the Marathon 101 Competition asked:

Q11.  During Marathon Infinity's development Double Aught requested that the second trigger on the SMG turn the player's hand 90 degrees so you could shoot "gangsta-style". Who was reported to have vetoed this request? Choose the correct one. (5 marks)

They're half-Marathon 1 and half-Marathon 2! Oh well. Artistic license? Yeah, let's go with that. Are there even yellow Bobs? I think there are. All simulacrums are green, I think. "All green Bobs must die." Ramble ramble.

In Marathon 2 there's a terminal that says Simulacrums have red eyes. I wonder why normal Bobs don't really notice this, but oh well.

I also drew their octular implant things on the wrong side of the face. Whoops. I didn't want to erase the left Bob's eye because I thought it looked nice, and I knew I wouldn't be able to re-draw it. I didn't want to draw it correctly on the other Bob because then it'd be weird.

I also wanted to use something other than "Frog Blast the Vent Core" but alas, I haven't played Marathon 2 that much, and I don't know what they'd say (Besides 'Kill me!'). Plus, the thing they say in Marathon 1 ("Thank god it's you!") would be kinda hard to work into a normal sentance.
Now that's a sketchy story.

Happy sketchy Friday.

Stay sketchy.

This Day in Marathon.

Day #549.

Happy Marathon 2: Durandal shipping day!

Yes folks! On this day 29 years ago Marathon 2:Durandal shipped.

Cyberian Outpost posted that they had just received copies and were shipping (November 21, 1995).

Just in time for Thanksgiving.

Officially it wasn't suppose to be released until November 30, 1995 but as fate would have it the boxes were done this time.

Indeed the first Marathon 2 box rolled off the production line on November 10, 1995 and was auctioned off in Bungie's Marathon 2 Charity Auction for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The highest bid in the Marathon 2 Charity Auction was $612 and the bidder was Michio Hashimoto (aka Miha) from Japan.

Miha was one of the earliest Vidmaster's to embrace the challenge set down by Jason Jones in January 1995 to complete all of the game's levels on Total Carnage starting with only the pistol and x1 health (via Command-Option Begin Game).

He also created the Marathon Comic in both Japanese and English.

Michio Hashimoto (aka Miha). The Marathon Comic. 1995.

Print-outs from the comic adorned the walls of the Bungie office according to Doug Zartman (former Bungie PR Director).

Photographs courtesy of Doug Zartman on x.com.

But he is probably best known for the Japanese version of the Marathon Infinity Strategy Guide. It came bundled with the game in Japan.

What happens in Marathon Infinity?

Part of the translated text on the cover of the Marathon Infinity Strategy Guide reads:
This will surely solve the mystery!
The Guide also came with a CD of exclusive content.

You see... Marathon is... Big In Japan.

This Day in Marathon.

Day #547.

Back on Friday we featured the following artwork and asked who was the artist and was there a larger version?

Now thanks to President People in a Story forum post we have some answers and a final colored version of the artwork.

The artist is Noah Summers (aka NES 1138, aka JohnDoe).

The artwork was originally linked on DeviantArt back in 2008 but is now gone.

Concerning the artwork Noah wrote in a Phforums post:
...here is the Marathon Man, in all of his penciled glory. In keeping with Craig Mullins' tradition of non-existent weaponry, he is holding a Halo-Marathon Assault Rifle hybrid. I actually like how that came out enough that I'm going to recreate it in 3D (just the gun).
Noah went on to say that his artwork was featured in GameInformer "God of War III" issue Reader Art section

President People tracked down the issue and the Reader Art section.

Idea for a mobile platform for durandal

He had it built from spare s'pht cybernetics. It's just a remotely controlled body, should the signal be interrupted the body will stop acting and self destruct in 10 seconds if a signal is not reestablished. The platform is capable of violence but durandal prefers to engage with the ship and enjoys pointing the security officer at something and watching him kill to doing it himself, the defences are more of a last ditch measure (he keeps one unit that he can manually activate in his core). The platform can shoot blasts like the s'pht and durandal learned to sword fight for aesthetic reasons. Since he has now hands to hold them he started to collect sword like weapons on the various planets the rozinante visits. The lower arms can be easily replaced and taken off and on while the upper pair is build in more solidly. Durandal prefers to use the lower arms for things while keeping the upper arms in a t-pose to keep up the sword silhouette of the platform but the upper arms are still as mobile as the lower ones.

He built this thing for basically 50% Agency reasons and 50% dramatics.

No big surprise really as Destiny fans have been telling us since the Marathon Announcement trailer last year that Marathon is Destiny so just play Destiny.

...it's not fair to say that bungie did the m1 and m2 story and that DA did the M:infinity story. They were all done by myself in conjunction with someone else. If you want to lay the blame or credit concerning any of the stories, point your attention at myself. I was the responsible party for the story in all the games. As for the infinity "plot" it was a bit of an experiment in terms of seeing how much people could digest from a complex, hard to follow story. From the results, I would conclude that people like reading stories at about the 5th grade level of complexity. Which is fine. I learned the lesson. We'll forever stay off the Garden of Forking Paths.

So here's hoping we finally see the real Camille Ashlyn Kuningham in the future.

The original image on Marathon Discord weighed in at over 11MBs and is now gone... wiped out... Phhht! Just like that.

Only it's not because this is the Story page and this is what we do... since 1995.

This Day in Marathon.

Day #536.

It's sketchy Friday.

We've got sketches.

First up...

SIG gives us this work in progress piece entitled Marathon MIDA.

Marathon MIDA by SIG on Marathon Discord. June 2, 2023.

Not sure if this ever got finished or what happened to Marathon MIDA man.

Maybe a Traxus Runner caught up with him?

The above sketch is by Nerdicon Prime (@Nerdicon_) on X and features a Traxus Runner with Fusion Pistol and in the other hand... the thing we do not mention!

Bored in class? Alex Blashill (aka AlexB207) was and did this (as you do)!

Q:  How do you tell the difference between the good Bobs and the bad ones?
A:  Good Bobs?
A Bungie joke immortalised in green on the map of the Marathon 2 level God Will Sort The Dead...

It's a Jason Jones level so what else would you expect. He famously wrote on the Marathon map Bob-B-Q.
BOB-JAM? APPLY GRENADES LIBERALLY!!
Now Stuffy Junk (@stuffyjunk) on tumblr gives us Frog Blast the Vent Core!

Frog blast the vent core! by Stuffy Junk on tumblr. November 5, 2024.

A Clint Eastwood 'Go Ahead, Make My Day' animation!

Over the years people have tried to capture that Frog Blast the Vent Core moment.

One of my favorites is Merciless Marine by Phobos-Romulus (aka Neal D. Anderson brother of Nathan Anderson).

Merciless Marine by Phobos-Romulus on DeviantArt. November 28, 2006.

It's usually not a good idea to pretend that you're a simulacrum in front of a marine. We all know what marines do to simulacrums. This is the only drawing on this page that is not completely original. The face is based off of a Kevin Maguire drawing.
Oddly, the drawing reminds me of a youthful Joe Staten who took part in Bungie's epic adventure to the mystical Ming Choy.

The Ming Choy would later featured in Bungie's 7-Step World Domination Plan. Namely, Step 4: Acquire strangely addictive Chinese food company.

Ling Ling's T-Shirt and Bungie's 7-Step World Domination Plan. July 2000.

The rest they say is history!

But I digress.

To find out more about Frog Blast the Vent Core, its origin, Marathon Bob versus Microsoft Bob, and why it is the punchline to a really dirty joke then check out The origin of Frog Blast The Vent Core (and some other stuff too) section.

It's the Xbox version.

When asked to explain Marathon Durandal to Xbox players by global corporation IGN (Imagine Games Network) Bruce Morrison (producer of Marathon Durandal) replied:
"Marathon is quite possibly one of the most discussed and examined First Person Shooters of all time."
Why do you think Bungie Inc. are releasing another game called... Marathon?

So... those Tau Ceti artifacts.

How many pieces do you need to create a Prime Artifact?

Steve Cotton (Creative Director on Marathon). Somewhere In The Heavens - ViDoc.

There is always one more piece to get that Prime.

The concept art animations for the Somewhere In The Heavens - ViDoc were created by Kennon Fleisher (Motion Graphics Lead at Bungie) and animators Adam Schmisek and Ryan Policky.

Prime Artifact animation development courtesy of Kennon Fleisher.

Kennon Fleisher writes:
"Marathon holds a special place in my heart as it was a game I grew up playing and modding with Forge and Anvil. It's arguably the very thing that got me interested in being a professional creative, so it's pretty amazing to come full circle and work on the re-incarnation of the game."
Hardcore Marathoner modders will no doubt be able to track down what Marathon mods Kennon Fleisher released back in the day.
