This Day in Marathon.
Day #647. It's sketchy Friday! We've got sketches. Here come the Nar! ![]() The Nar sketch by Phobos Romulus (Neal D. Anderson) on DeviantArt. December 16, 2008 The above sketch is by Neal D. Anderson (aka Phobos Romulus) on DeviantArt. The Nar were created by Robert McLees. Below is a photograph of him from the Marathon Scrapbook working on the only image of them in Marathon 2: Durandal. ![]() Apart from this image Rob created an extensive backstory for the Nar but it was never used in the game. Fortunately he related this backstory for the Marathon Scrapbook which was part of the Marathon Trilogy Box Set. A massive Monolith-style black box. Bigger on the inside than on the outside as Bungie's Doug Zartman demonstrated. ![]() Unfortunately the original 700 page Marathon Scrapbook was too big to fit inside the box and Matt Soell (editor-at-large) had to take drastic action to make it fit. ![]() Fortunately you can now read the full Nar backstory on the Marathon Art of Craig Mullins gallery. I know... reading stuff is hard, finding stuff is even harder... but this is the Marathon's Story page after all. ![]() At The Library by captainkupo on tumblr. May 25, 2023. But I digress. The Nar remind me of the Sontarons in Dr. Who (TV series). The Sontarons first appeared in the Third Doctor's episode The Time Warrior in 1973 and then throughout the series at various times. ![]() Their large battle helmet just screams Nar. Given that Marathon's Leela is named after Dr Who's Leela there may be something in all of this. The Nar feature again in Marathon Infinity. On the level Thing What Kicks... there is an account of the interrogation of Robnar the Nar High Seer. ![]() Robnar. Get it? The Narrative Lead on Marathon is affectionately referred to as... The Nar. Get it? Happy sketchy Friday. Stay sketchy. |
