However there is a reference to an AI called Traxus IV in the original game (Marathon 1994). ref Here is the relevant text.
It is a side effect of Rampancy that AIs generally become more aggressive and more difficult to affect by subterfuge. Thus, actually disassembling a Rampant AI is quite dangerous. This was evident in the Crash of Traxus IV in 2206. By the time that the Rampancy of Traxus was detected, he had already infiltrated five of the other AIs on the Martian Net. The only recourse for the Martians was to shut down the Martian Planetary Net. Even then, it took two full years to completely root out the damage that Traxus had done, and the repercussions of the Crash were seen for over ten years after his Rampancy had begun. The date 2206 was not one of the dates later corrected by Bungie ref so it stands as is in the Marathon timeline. Most of the information we currently have about Traxus comes from the Traxus Global website at traxus.global . If you try to access the Traxus Global website on your mobile you will get this. (Hint hint folks... Bungie say... get a desktop terminal to read Marathon stuff.) Traxus Global is a unit of Traxus OffWorld Industries. Their mission statement is:
WE BUILD WORLDS D It is unclear what the superscript D means at this stage. It does appear on the Sekiguchi Genetics mission statement - Life Enhancement D so it may be a some form of future trademark / copyright thing. According to the Traxus Global website Traxus (Traxus OffWorld Industries) was founded in 2095 as Traxus Intelligent Machines.
2095 Traxus Intelligent Machines built AIs. Their aim was... "to create an entity that could pierce the veil of the cosmos and unlock the enigmatic secrets that lay hidden in the celestial abyss."
Well we all know how that turned out!
2145 Based on this information we can speculate that Traxus IV was an AI (fourth generation) built by the Traxus Interplanetary Corporation which went rampant causing a shut down of the Martian Planetary Net in 2206. Note also that the image for 2145 refers to:
Applied Nanotechnology
Interdimensional Physics? Oh dear! "I have a bad feeling about this."
2300
Note also that the image for 2300 refers to:
Neural Implant Clinical Trials Interdimensional Diplomacy and Cultural Exchange? Enter the Jjaro (pronounced Yaro) again?
The alien projection appeared in the early Spring of 1994, flickering suddenly into existence deep within the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The hologram of the Jjaro diplomat interrupted, quite deliberately, an important briefing of the President by his senior military staff. It told them they had eight days to save the world.
The Jjaro diplomat is a reference from Pathways Into Darkness. ref
2400 Note also that the image for 2400 refers to:
Subterranean Laser Harvester There is a detailed account of 'CRIST Sol orbiters' in the original Marathon game. ref In 2408 work on converting the Martian moon Deimos into a colony ship (UESC Marathon) begins. It take sixty four years to complete. The UESC Marathon is launched in 2472, destination Tau Ceti IV. The voyage will take about 300 years. Why go to Tau Ceti?
Answer in less than seven words... JJARRO WERE AT TAU CETI

The text cycles through the following:
ANALYZING ORIGIN On the main page the centre ring is composed of 95 names, mostly forms of mining equipment, some quite exotic (e.g. Traxo-Drillinator 3000). Somewhat reminiscent of the Pfhor "Cutteray" . ref

![]() Four days after the Traxus Global website was found the main page was updated (May 27, 2023 at 9.26 AM PDT) with an Open Letter to Investors from CEO of Traxus OffWorld Industries Domonkos Szarka. However, we are getting ahead of ourselves. We have a long way to go yet before we read that. On the Research & Innovations page we are invited to explore Traxus' latest projects.

THE POST-SCARCITY FUTURE:
Information is also provided on asteroid 2867-KD. Interesting to note that there is an actual asteroid called 2867 Steins which is classed as an E-type asteroid.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The History page contains five key periods in the history of Traxus: 2095, 2145, 2300, 2400, 2888. A span of just over 800 years. The opening text on the History page states:
THE TRAXUS ODYSSEY
See above for more details on the history of Traxus.
WE AT TRAXUS UNDERSTAND THE PATH TO GREATNESS IS PAVED WITH THE DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS OF COUNTLESS INDIVIDUALS. OUR COMMITMENT TO HUMANITY IS A SOLEMN PROMISE TO HONOR AND CHERISH THOSE DREAMS AS WE VENTURE FORTH INTO THE UNCHARTED TERRIIORIES OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM HAND IN HAND WITH THE HUMAN RACE

On the bottom right corner of the Traxus Global page is the email address Sending an email to this address returned the following automatic reply: ![]() Obviously the right password or correct phrase was required. In an effort to overcome this problem Dwarf on the Game Detectives Discord sent the whole Traxus webpage text to the email address and got back the following reply. ![]() The brute force method gets the job done. There are number of words that would have triggered the correct response from Vulcan. The one on the Traxus webpage text was either 'titan' or 'axion' part of the work 'traxionic'. The one that Bungie might have expected at this stage in the ARG was 'axion' from a redundant piece of code in the marathonthegame.com source. The binary string... decodes to ... This is the web address of the UESC. It was found at 2.35 PM PST May 23, 2023.
All four web sites in the Marathon ARG had now been found.
![]() Clicking it opened a TRAXUSCONNECT window. ![]() However it needs a password, or more specifically the name of a Traxus Chat Room to connect to. Failure to enter the right Chat Room name gave this response. ![]() When the Somewhere In The Heavens - ViDoc went live at 5.59 PM PDT May 24, 2023 it contained a clue to the Chat Room name. Early in the ViDoc (52 seconds) the following image was displayed for a split second. ![]() The image contains the Traxus logo and a string of letters/numbers U0VSUEVOVA== . Note that the second character is the number 0 and not the letter O. The two = characters at the end of the string are characteristic of a Base64-encoded string. The length of a Base64-encoded string is always a multiple of 4 if it is not it can be padded up to two times using the = character. In this case U0VSUEVOVA== is 12 characters long with the added two = characters. The Base64-encoded string U0VSUEVOVA== decodes to the word SERPENT. SERPENT is the name of the Traxus Chat Room. Connecting to the Chat Room displayed the following chat text at four different time periods. Time in the chat is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). UTC is seven hours ahead of PDT time. Day 1. TOI_Board = Traxus OffWorld Industries Board. Interorbital United Shipping = UESC. Project: GOLIATH has been subject to long-term surveillance by Traxus. Traxus are searching for a passphrase to access United Shipping but it is scattered across the net. The search for the passphrase is being conducted in-house but Traxus may use outside help to track/crack the phrase. MIDA are also searching for the passphrase. Some safety concerns at four Martian mining zones: Elysium A O1, Coprates E 04, Oxia Pallus B 01, and Margaritifer C 03. Two United Shipping passphrases have been found CTEONOIA and VKVC . (Both are Rotation (ROT) encryption ciphers. ROT24 will decode these to ARCOLOGY and TITA .) More passphrases are required, but they are scattered. Traxus have sent Sekiguchi Genetics a Purchase Order (PO) to acquire biomata supplies for an undisclosed operation. Securing the biomata is key to their planned manifest (manifest suggests a voyage). Traxus are planning to use outside consultants (freelancers) to lead their first wave response. However, not everyone is happy with this approach but for speed and plausible deniability, freelancers are the only option. Fuller measures including follow-on support via Zeta-level Enforcer units are part of a long-term plan. The PO is constructed to obfuscate pertinent details. Traxus hopes that the PO will not draw any attention and slip undetected through the normal procurement process. The PO is attached in the chat but cannot be opened. Another password is required. ![]() What's in the PO? To be continued... ![]() ![]() Last updated July 28, 2023 |
