"I did this a while ago. I was supposed to do more, but this one was not in the right direction." When I first saw this back in 2000 I thought... hmmm that looks like the creature from the Pathways Into Darkness box.
The main artwork for the box was created by Phil Candela. You can see his signature at the bottom.
Phil Candela also did the box art for Bungie's earlier game Operation: Desert Storm. The creature on the box with the large claws never appears in the game and later versions of the box have the creature covered over.

About: | Different version from the one released in July 2000.
Slightly wider frame of view, no blood on the ground, small statues at the
foot of the stairs, missing weapon, more detail on the creature.
"It is my favorite Bungie game. It was totally immersive. It was rather primitive technically, but I really liked how the game was designed. Maybe it is a case of first love, but I have not enjoyed a game as much since." So perhaps on a subconscious level this concept piece was influenced by Pathways Into Darkness. Either that... or a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... the Jjaro convinced some other President to send in a crack team of marines to kill an alien god buried two miles below an ancient structure. I wonder how that turned out for them? |
