...which she caused to be consumed by an ashless fire.
The Marathon level 'Never Burn Money' is notable for a number of reasons. Here are just four:
- First true new level in the game as both Arrival and Bigger Guns Nearby were in the Marathon Demo.
- First level to have map writing - JJARRO WERE AT TAU CETI .
- Contains the super hard to get to cryptic Gheritt White terminal.
- Contains the equally cryptic fourth terminal (aka "The Woman").
Commenting on this level the creator Greg Kirkpatrick wrote:
This map was the first attempt to make a really big map. The idea was to create an area that felt like a real space on the ship. To give the feeling of some control rooms, something that would actually get used by someone. It also had an extremely difficult secret area that hid a story that I wrote while working on Marathon. I'd have to say that looking back on the whole thing, I'm much more happy with the level than with the Gherrit White story, although I think the story added quite a bit of mystery to those who found it.
Note how Greg used the 'Gherrit' spelling here rather than the in-game spelling 'Gheritt'. Shades of 'Jjaro' and 'Jjarro'.
But this is not about the Gheritt White story... this is about... "The Woman".
The fourth terminal on Never Burn Money is designated as <L023.AMS.Random.Term3> in the game's resource fork. Since the levels and terminals are numbered starting from 0 in the game's resource fork this is terminal L023. The AMS stands for Automatic Manufacturing Systems which is your current location. You are on this level to collect three replacement circuits which have just been manufactured.
The terminal is also designated as Random which corresponds with the Original Level Notes for Marathon which has a hand written note stating:
3. Another terminal? Place for some random info.
When you arrive at the fourth terminal it has a S'pht (Compiler) in front of it.
The Compiler appears so engrossed in what it is doing that it won't attack you unless you disturb it. This is nice map-based trick that Bungie did in the early levels to give the Compilers a 'creepy' vibe as they diligently and silently hack the Marathon's systems and AIs. As Leela states on Arrival:
I have learned that there is an Alien creature that is capable of interfacing with our systems. You must kill any of these creatures that you find. It is a priority that we stop them. Even now, they are penetrating my defenses.
The message on this terminal is garbled but does appear to contain a story
about a woman. It reads:
WARNING: CORE OS (AF44+2DEB) MOD DATE LATER THAN CURRENT DATE/TIME ff~~x~f~sx~~ %%%here was nothing to be gained from hesitation now%&^)}:>?~~~~~~~fxf~~~~~~~~~~f~~~~ et in her possession it would become something of consequence: though it was nothing more than a simp~le tho`~~``f`~~~rticular flower, or more precise~. ~~hen she had it just so the room flickered and tore, bending into somewhere else: ~~~ffs`~~~~f~~~[system error #25 at _Jackson]~~~~%*|\]~``se which she caused to be consumed by an ashless fire. doors opened before her without cause, their locks rusted and shatter#~#[>ff fxf~~~~~ ~~efore her slender hands began to dance in front of her horrified face. r~~fefore turning into a fine powder which settled in a pile on ~~~~4*) where she had been standing.<'scod BFB1 0002'+1Ad2> 14 seven hundred miles away, eyes on fire, tearing at her hair. In 2005 MrHen <marathon@mrhen.com> in a Story forum post
attempted to reconstruct the text of the terminal (see below).
[T]here was nothing to be gained from hesitation now[...] [y]et in her possession it would become something of consequence: though it was nothing more than a simple tho[rn] f[rom] [...] [pa]rticular flower, or more precise[ly][...]. [W]hen she had it just so the room flickered and tore, bending into somewhere else: [...] [el]se which she caused to be consumed by an ashless fire. [...] doors opened before her without cause, their locks rusted and shatter[ed.] [...][b]efore her slender hands began to dance in front of her horrified face. [...][b]efore turning into a fine powder which settled in a pile on [...] where she had been standing. 14 seven hundred miles away, eyes on fire, tearing at her hair. Turning in fury she kicked viciously a[t] [...] Anger made her careless and she mis[sed.]
Tidying this up and adding a bit of interpretation he got:
There was nothing to be gained from hesitation now. Yet in her possession it would become something of consequence: though it was nothing more than a simple thorn from a particular flower, or more precisely... When she had it just so the room flickered and tore, bending into somewhere else: somewhere else which she caused to be consumed by an ashless fire. Silently, doors opened before her without cause, their locks rusted and shattered. [...] before her slender hands began to dance in front of her horrified face. [...] before turning into a fine powder which settled in a pile on the floor where she had been standing. 14 seven hundred miles away, eyes on fire, tearing at her hair. Turning in fury she kicked viciously at the dust. Anger made her careless and she missed.
Forrest of B.org <forrest@bungie.org> suggested
that the line "a simple thorn from a particular flower, or more precisely..." could be describing a rose.
Thus we get.
There was nothing to be gained from hesitation now. Yet in her possession it would become something of consequence: though it was nothing more than a simple thorn from a particular flower, or more precisely a rose.
So in 2005 this was possibly the closest we had got to deciphering the story of "The Woman" after 10 years.
Perhaps it is time to revisit her story again?
In Marathon 1, Tycho says:
^`Bernard St~~~ there is a way to delay the~ onset of the second stage, and he ~sed this to control Durandal an~56*~~`~~~`~`~~~fxfffIn the previous level, you see the following at the top of the fourth terminal:
WARNING: CORE OS (AF44+2DEB) MOD DATE LATER THAN CURRENT DATE/TIMEYou may remember that back in the day, time-limited shareware licences and the like could be subverted by changing your computer clock to trick the program into thinking your trial period was still in effect. Perhaps Strauss was 'slowing down' his computer clock in a similar way to slow down Durandal's rampancy.
This would indicate that the author of the terminal was Durandal, since he would have had a 'mod date' later than the actual 'core OS' date.
Does knowing that the above text is perhaps from Durandal help our understanding?
