Well, I thought I was getting reasonably good at the Marathon demo.
Then I changed the difficulty from Normal to Major Damage...
Took me thirty tries of getting hacked to bits on the first level before I
finally made it to the first airlock door (although the rest the level and
the first half of level 2 were easier.)
I try to sidestep and back up but I always run out of room!
Might someone who's pumped up post a movie showing the correct way to get
through Level 1 on Major Damage?

Here's a little flik I did. It's pretty long, but it's real thorough, and
shows everything you need to do to get through level 1 without using too
much ammo. I'd LOVE to see someone complete level 1 without using ANY
ammo on major damage. here we go:

well...if you don't mind me saying :
(a) you were lucky the 4 nasties in the room down the stairs , near the
beginning, didn't all come after you at once and stopped at the stairs
(especially, since you had absolutely no shields left).
(b) your handling of the blue nasties in the southern most room
was...well...kinda boring and wasted a *lot* of ammo. you should just
run into the room, and run circles around them, make them kill
themselves off, then finish off the last fella with fists.
(I didn't finish watching you killing the blue guys coz it took you so long).

No need -- just don't do anything at the main screen and watch the demos.
They play level one on Total Carnage! All of the bug aliens are purple or blue!
I thought I was pretty good at Marathon, but the guy in the demo is
incredible! What an ego buster!
Do all of you other people not associated with Bungie play this well? Do I
just suck?

Actually, it looked like the person who did the Level 1 demo film was
deliberately allowing damage - there were several places where he could
have avoided hits, but didn't. I've gotten to the pattern buffer on Total
Carnage with more damage points left than the guy in the demo film did -
after the pattern buffer, the rest is relatively simple. (The only tough
part is the roomfull of aliens, but you can pass that by getting them to
kill each other.)
Now, I can't do it consistently. The first part of Level 1 on Total
Carnage is fairly random: if you attract the attention of the four or five
aliens in the downstairs room, and get surrounded, you're toast.
Sometimes they will hear me while I battle in the main corridor. I can't
take on more than three or four of them at once, in those parts. Either
the aliens need to be extremely deadly to each other (as in the room in
the maze), or you must take them on a few at a time.

I believe I just posted a film where I did major damage w/o shooting - but
I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure I could have done it though.. :) hint: let
the shooting aliens kill themselves off by running around them. I hope/am
scared thinking about if the new aliens are smarter when it comes to
predicting where you're running to as opposed to shooting where you're
at..
