They were rather dark, so I used Photoshop to brighten them and bring out a lot of details (I won't post the results unless I get permission from someone at Doubleaught, however). First, a note on preview pictures. What they show may or may not make it into the final game; that is clear from the preview screenshots of all three members of the Marathon series. Examples: M1 shows a Hulk in the bright green-floored chamber in "Mars Needs Women", M2 shows F'licktas, Hunters, and Enforcers in "Waterloo Waterpark", and Moo uses the M2 textures and has blue F'licktas in that central stream in "Poor Yorick" and VacBobs in a Jjaro-space-station level. In fact, the first screenshot ever of Moo, of some VacBobs vs. some Hunters and Drones in a Jjaro-textured corridor, does not appear to have made it into any of the game's maps -- it may have only been experimental. Though all the surfaces looked planar, they seemed to be oriented over the full spectrum of possibilities (Marathon has only horizontal and vertical). There was an object that cast a shadow and there was light coming into a tunnel, so the Duality engine does do shadowing. The sky looked like a rectangular-solid box; I wonder if the Doubleaught guys will improve on that in some later version :-) The textures were not quite Marathon textures, but they did seem more colorful than Quake's. There was no sign of any monsters or players, or at least of anything that could readily be recognized as one of these :-) -- Loren Petrich Happiness is a fast Macintosh petrich@netcom.com And a fast train My home page: http://www.webcom.com/petrich/home.html Mirrored at: ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/pe/petrich/home.html From: christop@ifi.uio.no (Christopher Henrik Lund) Newsgroups: alt.games.marathon Subject: Re: Duality Screenshots. The colors are much, much better than Quake's > two and a half colors. The whole game, so far, looks very promising. > Our color palatte is currently undergoing some revisions. As we're learning there are some very specific reasons that quake has very few different colors tones in their color palatte. We're actually planning on people playing in thousands most of the time. (if you have a reasonably fast video card the speed difference is not very great right now.) The reason that people will do this is that the game will simply look much better in thousands. Each group of similarly colored textures will have their own 8bit pallate and in thousands all of these different colors will be represented in 16 bit. That is that the _source_ for the texture has 256 different colors, but the actual render can have 16-bits of value. On another topic: We'll be making periodic updates to the screenshots, so keep your eyes open. Basically, each day we get new and cool things into the engine, but we don't want to spend all our time making screenshots. When we get exciting stuff and a bit of free time, we'll put it up. As for some of the other stuff, if people want to paraphrase my emails to them that's fine, i'd rather not get quoted simply because I'd rather not be embarrassed by my poor spelling and shoddy 3-in-the-morning-grammar. have fun, Greg K
