I'm a bit disturbed at the amount of erroneous information concerning
the tournament thats floating around so I'll give you the complete
story, just like I told ManNBlack when I talked to him on the phone
before I left for school. I knew that I'd be playing against all the
other people who played in the Kill the Man with the Skull game for
their first round so after I passed through my first round, I watched
the two other rounds to see the type of competition that I'd be facing
in my semi-final round match. In one of the rounds, I saw 2 guys
working together with the result that both of them advanced to my semi
round. They also had another friend who played in the next round so,
combined, there were 3 of them who would be in my round from which only
1 could advance to the 'Sudden Death' round where 2 people would face
off and the first person to get 1 kill would advance to the final round
of 3 people. Anyway, before my semifinal round started, the 3 guys were
blatantly plotting together saying how so-and-so would hold the ball
while the other 2 guarded him. Naturally, my friend Gus complained to
the Bungie people saying that this was unfair tactics. Matt Soell(the
Bungie guy who was running the tournament) said that this was fair
tactics and that he can't and won't do anything to stop it. The
computers were set up on 2 banks with each bank consisting of 3
machines. Those 3 guys filled one of the banks on their side while I
played on a different bank. Even though they did team up, i still
overwhelmed them getting over 2:30 time with the ball which was more
than a minute over 2nd place. I won my sudden death match so i was in
the finals. I was the last of the 3 people to advance to the finals.
My friend Gus was the first one who advanced. MNB was there that day so
he can corroborate all that I've said so far.
Anyway, Gus and I talked about the events of that day and since
Bungie said teaming up was allowed, we decided that we'd work together
in the finals. There were a total of nine rounds for the finals which
took over 3 hours to complete. After the first round was over, the
Bungie guys now claimed that teaming up would not be tolerated. We
quoted Matt from the day before saying how he allowed teaming up against
me in my semi-final round. The end result was that the first round
would be counted but Gus and I would be seperated with Gus playing over
by the other guy in the finals on the other bank of machines and me left
by myself. In the rest of the rounds, Gus and I were renamed and
recolored as per Bungie's wishes and no more teaming up occurred since
we did not know who each other was. Ryan Martell(another Bungie guy)
watched me in all of the rounds after the first one and clearly saw that
I was going after everyone and never made any comments to me whatsoever.
I was essentially isolated all by myself the entire time and missed out
on all of the excitement occurring on the other bank of machines.
Unfortunately, Gus was knee deep in it from what he told me. Since the
other guy's friends were also over by Gus, they ended up taunting him
the entire time that he was playing. About halfway through the
tournament, Gus was getting very annoyed with them and had had it. he
asked Matt after one of the rounds if he could come and talk to me and
Matt consented. At the time that Gus approached me, I was sitting on
the ground resting my feet. I had been walking around Macworld for the
past 3 days. So, in order for Gus to talk to me, he had to kneel down.
The reason that Gus wanted to talk to me was that he was considering
withdrawing from the tournament since he was taking so much unwarranted
abuse. I told Gus that it was fine with me if he withdrawed since I
strongly felt that I was better than this other guy and would be more
than happy to prove to this other guy that I was better than him in a
round where none of his friends could claim any cheating was occurring.
After working at Apple during the summer, i played against some godlike
mouse players, the best of which I am convinced that I can not beat in
Thunderdrome type games since he has too much of an adavntage with the
mouse. "Bob Saget" is only competent when compared to the best mouse
players at Apple.
When one of the Bungie guys saw Gus talking to me on the ground, he
complained and said that he could disqualify us. Gus immediately got
up, looked at the bungie guy, and said that he was withdrawing from the
tournament. the bungie guy was a little surprised at this and then 2
other bungie guys came over and conferred with Gus, trying to keep him
from removing himself from the tournament. it was decided that a 20min.
break would occur and if gus still felt like withdrawing after he had a
chance to cool down, than he would. I simply remained on the floor
resting under my Marathon terminal while Gus went off to get a drink.
When the games resumed, gus decided to play. Out of the nine rounds, I
won six of them including all 3 skull games(I had over a minute on 2nd
place in each of the skull games so they were clear victories), 2
carnage games, and 1 hill game. I would've won more of the hill games
but after the first hill game on One Hit Wonder, Gus complained about
the level and so they changed it. in fact, Gus quit out of that first
hill game. So in that game, it was actually a 1-1 game between me and
"bob Saget' where i had over 5 minutes on the hill compared to just over
3 mins. for him. The other 2 hill games were on the Giant Flaming Pit of Lava
map where both games ended up in fist fights with "Bob Saget" taking
clear victories of over a minute while gus and I each took a 2nd and
third with less than 10 seconds between us in each case. "Bob Saget"'s
one strength was his punching ability and with the mouse, he could
outturn both Gus and I and used it to his advantage.
Anyway, with 6 victories, I was the clear first place winner but,
amazingly enough, both Gus and the other guy tied for 2nd place so they
did a sudden death match on the map Lack of Vision with the winner being
the one to get 3 kills first. In a sort of poetic justice, Gus
dominated the match getting 3 kills on the other guy without getting
hardly a scratch. I thought it was good that the match between Gus and
the other guy came down to a mano-a-mano game in order to settle the
dispute.
After the match was over, I talked to the 3rd place guy a little bit.
He seemed nice to me and all and commented on how well I played. He
barely even shaked Gus' hand and essentially gave Gus the cold shoulder.
Even after everything was over, Bob Saget's friends were still ragging
us which I think is sad. It seems like they'd much rather think that
they were cheated instead of thinking that they were beaten. In fact,
one of the friends of Bob Saget was trying to get Gus' home address
after everything was over for some clearly malevolent reasons. My
sister actually told the guy that that was not Gus' address but was in
fact our address and she'd be willing to give it to him if he really
wanted it so bad(I had preregistered both gus and I and since they send
the tickets to the address listed on the badge and I didn't know Gus', I
simply put down my address). In response to that, the guy declined so
my take is that they felt wronged by Gus and not me. i think part of
this stems from their lack of maturity. Gus and I are both over 21
while some of those other guys were barely in their teens.
Its unfortunate that such a situation arose but when you start playing
some intense games of Marathon, the bottom line is that soemone has to
lose. I reminded Gus that even last year, this one guy claimed that I
was cheating by somehow looking around the 21inch monitor sitting in
front of me in order to see just his viewscreen even though there were 5
people playing simultaneously so carnage was everywhere which required
one's complete attention. At least in the final round last year, both
Shadow and I were completely engulfed by people so it was impossible to
claim that any cheating occurred.
Overall, I have nothing to hide about any of the incidents that
occurred and if anything is unclear or you have any further questions,
I'd be more than happy to discuss them. There are a few last things
that I'd like to add. First, after the first final round, the Bungie
guys were "coaching" Bob Saget on how to play Thunderdrome. The tactic
that they were promoting was one of camping in one of the rooms and
waiting for people to run by. Secondly, I'd like to add that Tuncer
Deniz was there to take in the final round of the tournament. At first,
he complained to Gus that he was cheating. After everything was over,
Tuncer apologized to Gus saying that he was wrong and Gus was playing
fair. Finally, Gus is not my current roommate nor has he ever been my
roommate. This year, we don't even live in the same suite. And yes, I
am confirming that I won the tournament. Unfortunately, because of the
film bug in M2 and that Bob Saget always gathered, you won't be able to
watch from my perspective in any of the films once they are released. I
actually made some pretty good moves in the skull games that I'd like to
see again :)
Still loving Marathon and just the "Cool" Bungie guys(just because you
work for Bungie doesn't automatically make you worthy),

Thanks a bunch for sending that info to me Cybern8r. It clears a bunch of stuff up, and also thanks a bunch to all of the rest of you people who gave me info. (Joe Kloss, ManNBlack, Sorry, and a few others). Well, that will probably be the last of the info updated... Thanks again!
